Indoor
Optimal indoor conditions include, air conditioning, HEPA or electrostatic air filter installed in heating and cooling systems, allergen encasing of mattresses and box spring along with a relatively dust free environment. It is important to control mold growth, which will flourish in damp basements, crawl spaces, roof leaks and showers. Frequently de-mold showers. Aluminum windows promote mold growth in winter. Mold may grow under wallpaper in bathrooms. Hardwood floors are preferred over carpeting as carpeting may harbor dust mites and mold production. Portable HEPA air filters, bathing of animals frequently, and keeping dander down with allerpet spray, as well as containing animals in restricted areas within house will significantly improve environment. The avoidance of tobacco smoke is also very important in reducing household irritants. In summer, keep windows closed and air conditioning on to reduce pollen exposure.

Travel
When traveling in an automobile, use air conditioning. Chose hotel rooms that are smoke free, and avoid down pillows and down comforters. You may want to bring your own pillow. Be aware of restaurant foods that may contain allergens such as MSG, sulfites and nuts. If on immunotherapy, receive allergy injection prior to going to warm climates, as allergens that are out of your locale may be in season at destination. Travel with medication. Venom sensitive patients remember to carry Epipen.
